In a swift and tactical operation, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad of the Delta State Police Command have successfully rescued five kidnapped worshippers of Elyon Paradise Ministry, Ogwashi-Uku, following an armed confrontation with suspected kidnappers.
Recall that the victims were abducted on February 22, 2025, while attending a night vigil service at the church.
Responding to the incident, according to a statement signed by SP. Edafe Bright, Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, swiftly mobilized tactical teams, including relocating the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad to Ogwashi-Uku with a clear directive to ensure the safe rescue of the victims.
"On February 25, 2025, a coordinated sting operation led by CSP Labe Joseph was launched in collaboration with the Ubuluku community vigilante group and other concerned locals. Acting on intelligence, the team stormed the Ubuluku forest, where the victims were being held.
"On sighting the operatives, the kidnappers engaged them in a fierce gun duel but were overpowered by the superior firepower of the police. The suspects abandoned the hostages and fled into the forest. The five abducted worshippers were rescued unharmed and have since been reunited with their families.
"During the operation, security forces recovered key exhibits, including thirteen expended cartridges and a bag containing ₦1.3 million, suspected to be ransom money. A manhunt for the fleeing suspects is currently underway."
Commending the officers, CP Abaniwonda lauded their bravery and also acknowledged the resilience of Ubuluku community vigilantes, human rights activists, and local residents who actively supported the rescue mission.
The Delta State Police Command reassured the public of its commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of all residents while urging citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement.
