The Lagos Police Command has launched a manhunt for unidentified gunmen who shot and killed Toba Ajiboye, the organising secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, along Ikorodu road. Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, was rushed to St.
Nicholas Hospital on Lagos Island where doctors pronounced him dead.
The shooting happened as Ajiboye travelled home from Fadeyi, his childhood neighbourhood. Attackers intercepted his white vehicle and fired multiple rounds through the windscreen and body of the car.
Initial reports suggested Ajiboye and others in the vehicle survived with gunshot wounds. Later accounts, however, indicated he succumbed to his injuries.
Chaos erupted on Tuesday at St. Nicholas Hospital when transporters blocked police from accessing the facility to retrieve his body.
The state police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed officers had been deployed across Lagos to maintain order.
"Investigation is ongoing to get the perpetrators. The command has deployed to strategic locations to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order," Adebisi told reporters.
Mustapha Adekunle, the Lagos NURTW chairman known as Sego, expressed deep grief over the death. He took to social media to mourn his colleague, calling him far more than just a union ally.
"The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken," Adekunle said. "It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable, and committed ally."
Adekunle hailed Ajiboye as a trusted friend and pillar of his political structure within the union. He emphasised the organising secretary's unwavering commitment to both the NURTW and the chairman's faction.
"Comrade Toba Ajiboye was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend, a man of steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment, and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation," the chairman said. "His friendship, unwavering support, and selfless dedication to the union over the years will forever remain etched in my heart."
The killing marks another violent incident involving transport union officials in Lagos. Adekunle stressed that Ajiboye's commitment and dedication to the union would be deeply missed by members.
