Police HQ Orders Arrest of Same-Sex Marriage Participants

The Police Headquarters has issued a directive to all police commands and formations across the country to arrest individuals involved in same-sex marriages.

This move comes as a response to the rising concerns about the growing acceptance of same-sex relationships and the perceived threat it poses to traditional family values in the Nigerian society.

The directive, which was issued on January 25, 2024, comes in the wake of several reports of same-sex marriages taking place in various parts of the country.

The Police Headquarters has stated that these marriages are in violation of the Nigerian Constitution, which explicitly prohibits same-sex relationships and marriages.

In a statement issued by the Police Headquarters, it was emphasized that the Nigerian law enforcement agencies will not tolerate any actions that undermine the sanctity of marriage and the family.

The statement further added that any individuals found to be engaging in same-sex marriages or relationships will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The move by the Police Headquarters has been met with mixed reactions from the Nigerian public.

While some have welcomed the directive, citing the need to protect traditional family values, others have criticized it as an infringement on the rights of individuals to freely express their sexual orientation.

Human rights organizations have also expressed concern about the directive, stating that it violates the fundamental rights of individuals to live their lives free from discrimination and persecution.

They have called on the Nigerian government to reconsider the directive and to take steps to protect the rights of all its citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation.

The Police Headquarters, however, has maintained that its directive is in line with the Nigerian Constitution and that it will continue to enforce the law.

The situation remains tense as the country awaits further developments on this issue.
