Police in Ogun State have arrested a 25-year-old content creator for allegedly uploading fake videos depicting bandit attacks. Kowiu Oloyede, known online as "Nice Boy," was paraded at the command headquarters in Abeokuta on Monday.
Oloyede admitted to creating the misleading clips to gain followers and build an online presence. He told investigators he wanted to become famous like popular TikTok streamer Peller.
Last Monday, he posted a video showing himself hiding in a bush with two others. Gunshot sounds played in the background as the caption read: "Bandit is in Atan, help us ooo."
In that clip, all three appeared terrified and claimed they couldn't locate their mother. The post sparked panic among residents and triggered widespread concern on social media.
Days later, Oloyede uploaded a second video showing a different scenario. He knelt beside a man he falsely claimed was his kidnapper, pleading for mercy.
He deleted that post on Thursday after it went viral and drew significant attention. Police say the Fulani man in the video didn't know he was being recorded.
During questioning, Oloyede explained his motivation in simple terms. "I noticed people were using gunshot sounds on TikTok and getting followers, so I decided to try it too," he said.
According to him, that's how other creators achieved fame. "I felt that was how Peller became famous.
I didn't know it would land me in trouble," he added.
He said he filmed the first video behind his shop with help from local boys. A neighbor had encouraged him, saying the videos could make him popular online.
Oloyede denied receiving money or sponsorship from anyone for the content. He claimed he acted independently based on what he saw other TikTokers doing.
Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi condemned the videos as false and dangerous. He warned all content creators against spreading panic for online engagement.
Babaseyi said this arrest should serve as a strong warning to influencers everywhere. He stressed that creators must operate within the law and avoid posting content that fuels fear or misinformation.
