Police authorities in Rivers State have arrested an Assistant Superintendent of Police over extortion allegations. ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and several other officers face investigation following public outcry.
A video circulating on social media showed the officers collecting money from civilians during official duties. State Commissioner Olugbenga A.
Adepoju ordered their immediate arrest and detention on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson ASP Blessing Kaborlo Agabe confirmed the development in a statement. She said the command takes such allegations seriously and views them as violations of professional standards.
According to Agabe, the conduct contradicts the core values of the Nigeria Police Force. The Commissioner emphasized that extortion won't be tolerated under any circumstances.
Adepoju stressed that officers must maintain public trust through accountability. He added that all personnel should respect human rights in their dealings with citizens.
The investigation will be thorough and impartial, officials promised. Any officer found guilty will face disciplinary action under the law and Nigeria Police Act.
Public cooperation triggered the crackdown, the command noted. Authorities encouraged residents to report misconduct through official complaint channels.
Rivers State Police Command remains committed to professional policing, Agabe said. The force will continue delivering quality service to all state residents, she added.
