The Delta State Government has condemned in strong terms the harassment and alleged sexual assault of women during the recent Ozoro Festival, vowing that perpetrators will be brought to justice.

In a statement issued on Friday, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the government was alarmed by reports of women being harassed and, in some cases, sexually assaulted under the guise of festival celebrations.

Describing the incidents as barbaric and unacceptable, Aniagwu stressed that cultural festivities must never serve as a cover for criminal acts or the violation of human dignity.

“The Delta State Government unequivocally condemns the harassment of women and reported cases of rape during the Ozoro Festival. Such acts are reprehensible and have no place in a civilised society,” he said.

He called on security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to launch an immediate investigation and ensure that all those involved are identified, arrested, and prosecuted.

“We have directed the police and other security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of these heinous crimes and ensure they face the full weight of the law. No one will be allowed to exploit cultural gatherings to perpetrate criminality,” Aniagwu added.

The commissioner reassured residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and protecting the rights of all citizens, especially women and vulnerable groups.

He also urged community leaders and festival organisers across the state to strengthen security arrangements and put preventive measures in place to avoid a recurrence.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence, the government warned that anyone found culpable would be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law.
