The Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 4 in Makurdi, AIG Dankombo F. Morris, organised a crucial meeting to address the surge in criminal activity plaguing Benue State.
The gathering took place at the Police Officers' Mess following an order from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who directed the session in response to rising crime across the state.
According to ASP Ayo Oluwaseun Martins, the zonal police spokesman, attendees included Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu, senior officers, government representatives, lawmakers, traditional rulers, clergy members, and civil society leaders. The meeting also drew the Police Community Relations Committee chairman, NGO representatives, and members of the Civil Protection Guard.
AIG Morris told the gathering that securing the state rests on everyone's shoulders. He called on all present to work alongside police and other security agencies to safeguard communities and cut off criminals' escape routes.
The police chief promised to relay the meeting's findings and suggestions to the Inspector-General of Police. He said the feedback would help guide new security operations and policy changes aimed at curbing the insecurity crisis.
Participants aired their concerns about the specific security threats hitting their communities during the extensive talks. Government officials, traditional rulers and civil society groups each outlined the dangers they face.
The stakeholders proposed concrete steps to fortify security measures across the state. They emphasised the need for better information-sharing networks, stronger community involvement, and strategies to build sustainable peace.
All parties pledged to maintain close cooperation with law enforcement in fighting crime. The stakeholders reaffirmed their resolve to stand united with security agencies in the ongoing battle against criminal elements.
