Twenty months after Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, the political landscape in Delta State continues to echo with reflections on the outcomes, particularly for the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which faced a fierce contest across the state.

The PDP, known for its historical stronghold in Delta, saw an unprecedented shift as it lost two senatorial seats to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and narrowly held onto Delta North, where Senator Ned Nwoko emerged victorious.

In Delta Central, Ede Dafinone of the APC clinched the senatorial seat, while Joel Onowakpor-Thomas of the APC took Delta South. In Delta North, PDP’s Senator Ned Nwoko won by a narrow margin of 6,393 votes against Labour Party’s Barrister Kennedy Kanma, reflecting the increasingly competitive nature of the region’s political climate.

Acknowledging the challenges of the election, Senator Nwoko expressed deep gratitude to the people of Delta North. "It is indeed the will of God and your unwavering confidence in me that gave me victory," he said, vowing to advocate for Delta North’s interests and to pursue meaningful development in Anioma.

Since his inauguration in June 2023, Senator Nwoko has made strides in the Senate, demonstrating his commitment to his constituents and the PDP. His legislative agenda, highlighted by his sponsorship of bills and motions, underscores his dedication to the progress of Delta North and Delta State as a whole. Political analysts, including Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television, have noted Nwoko’s proactive legislative contributions, marking him as one of the Senate’s most productive first-time members.

Despite being a newcomer to the Senate, Nwoko’s prior experience as a member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 has proven invaluable, allowing him to navigate the Senate with the expertise of a seasoned legislator. His influence extends across several key committees, enhancing his ability to push forward initiatives that align with his vision for Delta North’s advancement.

With a strong focus on bills and motions addressing critical issues, Senator Nwoko is widely seen as a pivotal figure in Delta’s development. His constituents across the nine local government areas are urged to rally behind his vision, as his work in the Senate has shown promise for elevating Delta North’s role in national politics and addressing pressing needs within the region.

The PDP in Delta acknowledges the strategic importance of Senator Nwoko’s leadership, particularly as it prepares for the 2027 elections. As the sole PDP representative in the Senate, Nwoko’s success is essential to the party’s goal of reclaiming Delta South and Central while strengthening its foothold in Delta North.
