The next major evolution of ChatGPT, rumoured to be called GPT-5, may not be released until late 2025 or early 2026, according to OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati.
In a conversation with Dartmouth Engineering, Murati characterized the transition from GPT-4 to GPT-5 as akin to an individual advancing from high school to university-level intelligence.
"Observing the trajectory of advancement, systems akin to GPT-3 could be likened to toddler-level intelligence," Murati stated. "Subsequent systems, such as GPT-4, exhibit intelligence comparable to that of a clever high school student. Looking ahead, we anticipate Ph.D.-level intelligence in specific domains within the next few years."
Murati clarified that the "Ph.D.-level" intelligence would only apply to some tasks, noting that these systems are already human-level in specific tasks but not in many others.
She also confirmed that the next big step in AI is expected to come in a year and a half, indicating a late 2025 or early 2026 release date for GPT-5.
The timeline for GPT-5 has been the subject of much speculation, with initial rumors suggesting a late 2023 release. However, these predictions were later revised to indicate a summer 2024 release, which turned out to be GPT-4o, an impressive but not groundbreaking update.
Microsoft's CTO, Kevin Scott, has stated that next-generation AI systems will have the capability to pass Ph.D. level examinations due to enhanced memory and reasoning capabilities.
Murati's comments confirm that the next major evolution of ChatGPT is expected to bring significant improvements in intelligence and capabilities, although the exact timeline remains uncertain.
