Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf says the state is ready for the creation of state police, insisting the new security framework will boost community-based law enforcement and better safeguard residents and their property. He made the remarks on Wednesday during the launch of an inter-agencies taskforce tackling drug abuse and trafficking at the state government house.
According to Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor's spokesman, Yusuf stressed that state police would work alongside the Nigeria Police Force, not replace it. Both institutions, he said, share the duty of keeping order and protecting citizens.
The governor believes joint efforts between the two policing structures will sharpen intelligence work, quicken security responses and restore public trust in law enforcement. Kano has the institutional strength, skilled workforce and political determination to run a state police system once the constitutional and legal requirements are sorted, he added.
Yusuf pledged his administration's backing for moves to strengthen Nigeria's security setup and build a more secure space for business, learning and community life. He tied the taskforce launch to his broader security drive, framing it as a unified push against the rising menace of drug misuse and illegal trafficking within Kano.
The taskforce will intensify cooperation between security bodies, law enforcement agencies and other key players in tackling substance abuse and drug-linked offences, the governor explained. He urged taskforce members to work with professionalism, honesty and commitment, noting that sustained teamwork across agencies remains vital to beating drug abuse and trafficking.
His stance reflects wider national debate on creating state police forces to combat mounting insecurity nationwide. Several state governments have backed the push to decentralise policing across the country.
