Ondo’s Political Landscape Shifts as PDP Chieftains Defect to APC

In a stunning development for Ondo’s political landscape, the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Ade Adetimehin, announced on Tuesday that numerous chieftains of the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were poised to defect to the ruling party.

Adetimehin made this declaration following the official defection of former state House of Assembly member Mr Tomide Akinribido, who previously served under the PDP’s platform.

This news comes as a significant blow to the PDP, as they lose key members to their opposition. The defection of Akinribido, a former deputy-minority leader in the state House of Assembly between 2019 and 2023, is a notable victory for the APC, as they continue to consolidate their position as the dominant political force in the region.

Adetimehin expressed his excitement over the recent developments, stating that the defection of Akinribido is a dream come true.

He praised the former lawmaker’s intellect and capacity, emphasizing that the APC would benefit greatly from his inclusion in the party.

Adetimehin also hinted at more high-profile defections to come, saying, “As he has come now, I want to tell you that more of PDP chieftains have expressed their readiness to join the APC, and very soon, you will know them.”

As the political dynamics of Ondo continue to evolve, the recent defections raise questions about the future of the PDP and the potential implications for the state’s political landscape.

With the APC’s umbrella expanding to accommodate more party faithful, the upcoming November governorship election is shaping up to be an interesting contest.

The move by the former PDP chieftains to join the APC is a testament to the growing influence of the ruling party in the region.

It remains to be seen how the opposition party will respond to this development and whether they can maintain their relevance in the face of such high-profile defections.
