Police in Rivers State have arrested 13 suspected thieves following a raid on a crime-prone area in Port Harcourt. The operation targeted the notorious black spot around Olu-Obasanjo axis.
A journalist, Allwell Ene, was attacked while investigating the area alone. His assault prompted swift action from authorities.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo confirmed the operation on Monday. She said Commissioner of Police Olugenga Adewole Adepoju ordered the immediate response after learning of the attack.
Officers from Olu-Obasanjo Division moved quickly to the scene. They rescued Ene and launched coordinated sweeps across the axis and surrounding neighbourhoods.
"The suspects are believed to be involved in various criminal activities, including phone theft and harassment of law-abiding residents," Kaborlo stated. "Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice."
A full investigation into the journalist's assault is now underway. Police say they're determined to identify everyone responsible.
Commissioner Adepoju has warned journalists and private investigators against working alone in high-risk areas. He urged them to partner with security agencies instead.
The command promised continued protection for residents and visitors. Officials say they remain committed to eliminating criminal elements from the state.
