Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The announcement was made on Friday.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, an illustrious Deltan from Ogwashi-Uku, is a two-time Minister of Finance who successfully led Nigeria’s exit from foreign debt obligations during her first term under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori commended the WTO's stakeholders for recognizing Okonjo-Iweala’s outstanding contributions by granting her a second term. She was first appointed as WTO Director-General in 2021.
The Governor praised Okonjo-Iweala for her exemplary career and expertise in economics and international development, highlighting her focus on economic reform, poverty reduction, and global trade, which have earned her numerous accolades and widespread respect.
“On behalf of my family, the Government, and the people of Delta State, I congratulate a worthy ambassador of Delta and Nigeria, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on her reappointment as Director-General of the World Trade Organization,” Oborevwori stated.
“Your reappointment is a testament to your competence and experience as a globally recognized economist and international development expert.
“That your reappointment came without opposition reflects the diligence and excellence you demonstrated during your first term.
“As you continue on this remarkable journey, our thoughts and prayers are with you. We are confident that you will once again bring pride and honour to Delta and Nigeria,” the Governor concluded.
