Obi urges Nigerians to remain hopeful for a better future

As Nigeria celebrates its 63rd Independence Day, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on Nigerians to not lose hope in the possibility of a better Nigeria. Obi, who is a former governor of Anambra State, issued a goodwill message to mark the occasion in Lagon on Sunday.

Obi expressed his concern over the grave uncertainties and hardships that Nigerians are facing due to the persistent failure of leadership after 63 years of nationhood. He said that the situation may be critical, but it is not hopeless. He stressed the need for responsible leadership and the role of Nigerians in demanding accountability from their leaders.

“Every nation invariably determines its own fate and destiny and gets the leadership it deserves. Nigeria cannot be an exception. If we subscribe to rogue leadership, then we must face the attendant consequences. At 63 years old, what type of questions are Nigerians asking of their leaders, and what type of answer are we expecting?” Obi asked.

He said that every October 1, since 1960, Nigerians have tried to review their lives as a nation but wondered if they could say that they are where they are supposed to be, despite their vast human and natural resources. He urged Nigerians to reflect on their past, present, and future and to work together for the common good of the country.

“Present realities notwithstanding, I am hopeful that a new Nigeria is possible, but the burden of responsibility is on Nigerians. We must not give up on our dreams of a better Nigeria. We must not allow our challenges to define us. We must not let our differences divide us. We must unite and work for the peace, progress, and prosperity of our nation,” Obi said.

He wished Nigerians a happy independence anniversary and prayed for God’s continued mercy and grace for the nation. He also commended the efforts of the frontline workers, security agencies, and civil society groups who have been working tirelessly to protect and serve the nation amid the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges.
