NLC, NECA, LP, and Others Criticize NASS for Raising 2024 Budget by N1.2trn

In a recent development, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), and the Labour Party (LP) have joined forces to criticise the National Assembly (NASS) for increasing the 2024 budget by N1.2trn.

This move has sparked a heated debate among various stakeholders, with many questioning the rationale behind such a significant increase.

According to the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Rep. Abubakar Bitchi, the budget increase was necessary to address the urgent need for infrastructure development in the country.

However, critics argue that the increase is excessive and may lead to a rise in inflation and further strain on the economy.

The NLC, NECA, and LP have all expressed their concerns about the budget increase and its potential impact on the Nigerian people.

They argue that the funds could be better utilised to address pressing issues such as poverty, unemployment, and the provision of basic amenities.

In a joint statement, the organizations said, “We are deeply concerned about the decision to raise the 2024 budget by N1.2trn.

We believe that this increase will have a negative impact on the Nigerian people and may exacerbate the existing challenges faced by our nation.”

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the National Assembly will reconsider its decision or proceed with the increased budget.

In the meantime, the NLC, NECA, and LP have urged the government to prioritize the needs of the Nigerian people and ensure that the budget is used for the benefit of all.
