Major Japan Quake Triggers Tsunami Warning, Residents Urged to Evacuate

In a shocking turn of events, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck the central region of Japan on January 1, 2024, prompting officials to issue a major tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Ishikawa Prefecture and other nearby regions.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of potential waves reaching up to 5 meters (16.5 feet) in height, urging residents to evacuate immediately to higher ground or the upper floors of tall buildings.

The agency has also advised people to stay away from the coast and to follow the instructions of local authorities.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has called for calm and urged residents to follow the instructions of the authorities. “We are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our citizens,” he said in a statement. “Please remain calm and follow the instructions of the authorities.”

The earthquake struck at around 4:10 pm local time, with its epicentre located in the Noto Peninsula, along the Sea of Japan.

The quake has caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure, with reports of cracks in roads and buildings collapsing.

The situation is still developing, and it remains to be seen what the full extent of the damage will be.

Our thoughts are with the people of Japan during this difficult time, and we hope for a swift and safe resolution to this crisis.
