Nigerian Government Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s Conditions for Trial Resumption

The Nigerian Government has rejected the conditions set by detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for the resumption of his trial on charges of treasonable felony.

The Federal High Court in Abuja heard Kanu’s demands on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, as he agreed to an accelerated trial on the condition that his demands are met.

Kanu, through his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, listed three conditions for the trial to resume.

These conditions include the restoration of his earlier granted bail, the setting aside of the arrest warrant issued against him based on allegations that he had jumped bail and escaped the country, and the permission for his lawyer to have unhindered access to him as required by law.

The Federal Government, represented by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, argued against these conditions, describing them as frivolous, vexatious, irritating, and baseless.

Awomolo stated that the court had previously rejected Kanu’s bail application and that the only option for him is to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal.

Further hearing is currently ongoing before Justice Binta Nyako.

The case has attracted significant attention in Nigeria and internationally, with many closely monitoring the developments in the trial of the IPOB leader.

As the situation unfolds, the Nigerian Government’s response to Nnamdi Kanu’s conditions highlights the complexity and sensitivity of the case, which has been a focal point in the country’s political and social landscape.
