The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission is keeping close watch on Belfast following reports of unrest in the Northern Ireland city. The agency expressed concern about isolated incidents affecting residents in the area.
NiDCOM called on Nigerians living in Belfast to stay calm and law-abiding. The commission urged them to avoid actions that could fuel further tensions.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NiDCOM's chairman and chief executive, said the agency was working with stakeholders. She wants to protect the interests of Nigerians abroad.
In her words, communities facing tension shouldn't allow isolated incidents to divide them. Rather, residents should strengthen their commitment to peace and mutual respect, she noted.
"Whenever communities experience moments of tension, it is important that we do not allow isolated incidents to divide us, but rather strengthen our commitment to peace, dialogue, and mutual respect," Dabiri-Erewa said.
NiDCOM's director of media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, issued the statement on Wednesday. He conveyed the agency's position to the public.
Officials expressed sympathy for those affected by the disturbances in Belfast. They stressed that restraint and respect for law and order matter during this sensitive period.
NiDCOM also praised community leaders working to promote peace and unity. Different groups in Northern Ireland have been making collaborative efforts, the agency noted.
Appeals from community figures for people to work with law enforcement have been encouraging, according to the commission. These efforts aim to prevent division within communities.
Nigerian community leader Jahswill Emmanuel spoke recently to the BBC about the unrest. He said he was saddened by recent events.
Emmanuel founded the Multi-Ethnic Sports and Cultures Northern Ireland (MSCNI) organization. He extended his condolences to victims and their families.
The community leader called on residents to support those affected by the trouble. He urged them to work together to preserve peace and stability.
According to Emmanuel, migrant communities including Nigerians remain dedicated to Northern Ireland. They should continue promoting peaceful coexistence despite current challenges, he stressed.
Isolated incidents shouldn't be allowed to create divisions, Emmanuel said. Security agencies and community members must work together closely, he added.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians living abroad. The agency urged residents to avoid inflammatory statements or actions.
Nigerians in Belfast should promote dialogue and mutual understanding, officials said. They must remain cooperative with authorities while staying vigilant.
NiDCOM plans to engage with relevant stakeholders moving forward. The goal is ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians in Northern Ireland.
