Naira Marley and Sam Larry, Nigerian singers who have been in police custody since Oct. 4, have filed a lawsuit against the police for violating their right to personal liberty.
The suit, which was filed by their lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Ojo (SAN), at the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, is seeking N40 million in damages from the police.
The respondents in the suit are: the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Waheed Ayilara; the Deputy Commissioner of Police Homicide Section Panti; and the Chief Magistrate Court One, Yaba. Ojo argued that the magistrate court’s order that authorised the detention of his clients had expired on Oct. 26 and that they should be released immediately. The suit has not been assigned a hearing date yet.
