Malama Ummulkhair died under brutal circumstances in Maraban Jos. The Islamiyya school teacher was lynched and burned by an angry mob in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

She was a mother of four. On Sunday afternoon, residents falsely accused her of attempting to steal children.

Ummulkhair was heading to an Islamic lecture when the accusation emerged. The rumour spread rapidly through the community.

A large crowd quickly gathered and attacked her. Police officers intervened and rushed her to safety at the local station.

But the situation spiralled out of control. Hundreds of angry youths and residents surrounded the police station demanding her release.

Security personnel tried desperately to restore order. The mob overwhelmed the officers and set her on fire.

Police fired warning shots to scatter the crowd along the Kaduna-Zaria highway. One youth was shot and several others were wounded in the violence.

An anonymous resident told our correspondent the incident was deeply troubling. He said an allegation alone should never lead to such tragedy.

"She was going to an Islamic lesson when people accused her," he explained. "Even at the police station, the mob came and burned her."

Community members blame rising fears about child theft in the region. Police vehicles were stationed in front of the station on Monday.

Soldiers were also deployed to keep watch. The military presence indicated authorities' concern about further unrest.

Village Head Suleiman Isa rushed to the scene on his motorcycle. Ummulkhair's husband had called him with a distress call.

"My friend, her husband, told me what was happening," Isa recounted. "People said she was stealing children while going to attend a preaching session."

Isa managed to reach her before the mob completely surrounded her. He contacted police immediately.

"We called the police because a huge crowd had gathered," he noted. "When they arrived, we took her to the station."

At the station, Ummulkhair asked Isa for water. The chaos made it impossible for him to help her.

Her Islamic teacher also came to plead with the mob. Both men begged residents to let the law handle the matter.

But the crowd wouldn't listen. They were determined to take justice into their own hands.

Isa later entered through the back door of the station. She was no longer there when he searched for her.

He emerged outside and discovered the horrifying truth. Ummulkhair had been killed.
