Fenway Sports Group has clarified why Michael Edwards stepped down as its chief executive of football, stating the respected executive departed after achieving the strategic goals outlined when he rejoined the club in 2024.

Edwards exited after just two years of a three-year contract, bringing his second stint at Liverpool to an end. FSG described the parting as a "planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities."

Group president Mike Gordon expressed disappointment at losing Edwards but acknowledged his role during a pivotal moment for the club. "We are naturally disappointed to see Michael leave," Gordon said, highlighting the contributions Edwards made.

Edwards returned in March 2024 to steer Liverpool through the transition after Jurgen Klopp's exit while also developing FSG's broader multi-club football strategy. According to Edwards, Liverpool now possesses the structure needed for long-term competitiveness.

"Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success," he said.

The 51-year-old acknowledged his excitement about expanding FSG's football operations across multiple clubs when he first returned. However, he explained that the wider project took a different path than originally planned.

"When I returned, I was excited not only by the opportunity to help guide Liverpool through an important period of transition, but also by the chance to help shape FSG's wider football ambitions," Edwards noted.

"While that broader project ultimately evolved differently to how we had originally envisaged, I am proud of the work our team undertook in presenting ownership with a broad range of thoughtful and well-developed options for the future," he added.
