Low Voter Turnout Plagues Delta State Rerun Election

The rerun election for the Ethiope-West Constituency in the State House of Assembly was met with a low voter turnout on Saturday.

According to reports from ADVOCATE correspondent, the people of Oghara, Mosogar, and Jesse Communities were seen going about their normal businesses in Ethiope-West Local Government Area.

Despite the presence of security personnel and INEC ad-hoc staff at the various polling units and wards, the voter turnout remained low.

The INEC Electoral Officer in Ethiope-West Local Government Area, Mrs. Beauty Ibiama, confirmed that sensitive election materials were distributed to the polling stations as early as 6 a.m., with voting commencing at 8:30 a.m.

Mrs. Ibiama explained that the people who were seen going about their businesses were in the areas where elections were not being held.

She also mentioned that five wards were covered in the ongoing rerun election, including Mosogar I & II, Jesse V, and Oghara I & II.

As of the time of this report, there have been no reported cases of ballot snatching or electoral violence, according to Mrs. Ibiama.

However, the low voter turnout raises concerns about the level of public engagement and interest in the political process in Delta State.

The Delta State rerun election is still ongoing, and the final results will determine the political representation of the Ethiope-West Constituency in the State House of Assembly.
