Local traders thrilled as National Youth Games boosts business in Asaba

Ahead of the arrival of state contingents and the commencement of the 8th National Youth Games, traders in Asaba and nearby areas are already celebrating the business opportunities the event brings.

They are also expressing gratitude to Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for ensuring the games are hosted in Asaba once again.

Although participants were scheduled to arrive on Monday, September 9, traders began setting up stalls around the Stephen Keshi Stadium as early as Friday, September 7. By the weekend, vendors offering a variety of goods were already in place, ready to cater to the anticipated influx of visitors.

Many traders shared their excitement, noting the significant financial prospects the games present. Ugochi, a trader, remarked, "We are excited to set up early, as the environment is already bustling with business activities. With over 5,000 athletes and officials expected, plus thousands of daily spectators, the business potential is immense."

She explained how small businesses stand to benefit significantly. "In these ten days, we could potentially earn more than we do in several months in our regular shops. Even those selling simple items like water will see an increase in sales due to the sheer volume of people."

The vendors offer a wide array of products, from food and drinks to clothing, electronics, and household items. Many traders returned after seeing positive results from the National Sports Festival and previous Youth Games.

"It's not just us street vendors who benefit," Ugochi added. "The ripple effect extends to hoteliers, transport operators, and even those contracted to cater for the athletes. The supply chain grows as vendors need to restock from bigger markets, which in turn source from rural areas. This is a prime example of how sports connect with and benefit the local economy."

Traders remain appreciative of Governor Oborevwori’s efforts, recognizing the significant boost to their businesses during these major events. "We are truly grateful to the governor for hosting the Youth Games again," Ugochi said, reflecting the widespread sentiment among local entrepreneurs.
