LG boss pledges reconstruction of deplorable Badagry Roundabout road

By Raji Rasak
Mr Olusegun Onilude,  Chairman, Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State  has assured residents of the coastal city of swift intervention  in the deplorable Badagry Roundabout Secretariat Road.
Onilude said the council would shortly begin  reconstruction of the road to give respite to residents whose movements had been negatively affected by its  deplorable state .
He gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry on Tuesday.
NAN recalls that motorists and passengers  plying the area  on May 3, protested the poor state of the road, lamenting over the delays  they encountered daily plying it.
They told NAN that the road, which led to the Badagry local government  area secretariat, had become impassable due to big potholes, resulting in heavy gridlock.
NAN correspondent who went round the road from the Badagry roundabout to Ajara Secretariat Road, observed that motorists and commuters  were struggling to navigate it due to its poor state.
Onilude, however, said the council had contacted  contractors for the job.
“They have given us their bills and we are working on how to raise resources for the project.
“The road is a route to our council and therefore, we will always feel concerned because along the route, we have facilities like shopping mall, council secretariat and the new administrative block which is almost completed.
“The road in question has become a perennial problem for us and this means it needs urgent attention.”
According to him, the council intends to do a lasting job on the road hence the delay in chosing the best contractor for it.
“The problem with the road is that it is sloppy if you are coming from the Badagry roundabout,   and from the Secretariat, it is up,  making it lower.
“So there is always water on it,  especially now that the rains are here,  and every year we try to  patch it up but the problem persists, hence the decision for a more comprehensive work.
The chairman urged residents to bear with the council as the challenge would soon be over.
“At times, things are not done with emotions. Problems are not solved with emotions, you have to plan based on available resources.
“We can say by the time we fix this one, we should have enough resources to fix other ones. These are challenges facing the council.”
Onilude said the council had done palliative work on the road saying: “For now, it  has reduced the hardship motorists are encountering.  We have made it motorable now,” he said.
