Dele-Bashiru, who came off the bench to replace Samuel Chukwueze, quickly made his presence felt, breaking the deadlock after a tense, evenly matched game. Nigeria had struggled to penetrate Libya’s solid defense throughout the encounter, with several close chances narrowly missed.
In a pivotal moment, Nigeria launched a swift counterattack, allowing the on-loan Lazio midfielder to coolly slot the ball past Libya’s goalkeeper, igniting celebrations among the Uyo fans and securing Nigeria’s top spot in Group D.
Despite a valiant effort from Libya, who remained resilient against Nigeria’s offensive pressure, Dele-Bashiru’s strike ultimately sealed the win. Earlier in the match, Nigeria came close to scoring through Chukwueze in the 70th minute, who missed a one-on-one chance, and Ademola Lookman, whose goal was disallowed for offside in the 83rd minute.
The win bolsters Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 qualification hopes, positioning them at the top of Group D with seven points, narrowly ahead of Rwanda, who trail with six points from three games. Nigeria is now set for the return leg in Libya on Tuesday, October 15, which could further cement their place in the tournament.
