Nigeria's disease control agency has raised alarm over surging deaths from Lassa fever. The NCDC confirmed that 214 people have died from the infection so far this year.
In a report released on June 22, the centre disclosed that the Case Fatality Rate now stands at 25 per cent. This means one in every four confirmed patients has not survived the illness.
Officials noted that mortality figures have climbed above what was recorded in the same period last year. Despite ongoing containment efforts, the situation remains troubling, they added.
The NCDC linked the spike to multiple factors. Patients arriving late at health facilities, poor health-seeking behaviour, and difficulties treating severe cases have all contributed to the rise.
"Lassa fever has claimed 214 lives in Nigeria, with the Case Fatality Rate rising to 25 per cent," the centre stated in its latest update.
Health authorities are now urging Nigerians to take preventive steps. Citizens should maintain good hygiene, steer clear of rodents, and visit clinics immediately if symptoms develop.
