A 19-year-old man, Samuel Ajayi, was docked at a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square on Wednesday on a three-count charge of illegal possession of firearms.

Ajayi is also standing trial for allegedly belonging to an unlawful security society.

The prosecution counsel, Mr A. I. Alli, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 19, 2022, at about 1 p.m. at Morogo police checkpoint at Badagry.

He told the court that police operatives found a locally-made pistol and live ammunition on Ajayi on the said date and he was suspected to belong to an unlawful society.

Alli said that the offences contravened the Firearms Laws of the Federation (2010) and the Unlawful Society Act of Lagos State (2021).

Ajayi pleaded not guilty to the charge before his counsel, Mr Olaide Olawure, urged the court to admit him to bail in the most liberal terms.

Presiding Justice Yetunde Adesanya granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.

She ruled that the two sureties should be resident in Lagos State and must show evidence of payment of two years tax to the state government.

Justice Adesanya thereafter adjourned the case until Dec. 18 for trial.
