Lagos State has shifted all Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers planned for Wednesday, July 1, to Tuesday, July 7. The move comes after the Oro Festival was declared in parts of Ikorodu Division, prompting authorities to act.

The state government said it made the decision after consulting with stakeholders to protect candidates, exam officials and other participants. All other examination papers will proceed as originally planned, the ministry confirmed.

"This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard the lives of candidates, examination personnel and other stakeholders, as well as to ensure the smooth and orderly conduct of the examination without disruption," a statement from the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said.

The 2026 BECE started on Monday, June 29, and will continue without interruption except for the postponed papers. Students must collect updated timetables from their schools before the July 7 sitting.

The government apologised for any trouble caused by the change. It urged parents, guardians, school administrators, students and the general public to cooperate and show understanding.

The Lagos State Examinations Board stressed its dedication to running credible, transparent and smooth exams that align with the state's education goals. The board said it remains committed to these standards.

The Oro Festival is a traditional Yoruba religious ceremony involving male-only rituals and temporary restrictions on movement in affected areas. Communities observe it to honour deities, maintain order and uphold customary traditions.
