The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has clarified that Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to President Tinubu, was not arrested but rather questioned as part of its investigation into the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council scandal. Demola Bakare, the commission's spokesperson, said in a statement on Tuesday that Gbajabiamila responded to investigators' questions on a voluntary basis and was permitted to leave afterwards.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives arrived at the ICPC's Abuja office on Tuesday afternoon, spent time with investigators, and departed shortly after, according to Bakare. "He was not arrested; he simply willingly honoured an invitation," the spokesperson said in the statement.
The anti-graft agency noted that its probe into the PFIPC controversy remains active and fresh details would be shared when appropriate. Jiti Ogunye, Gbajabiamila's lawyer, had disclosed on Monday that the presidential aide appeared before the ICPC to address questions relating to the alleged PFIPC scandal.
President Tinubu instructed the ICPC on July 2 to launch a thorough investigation into the controversy. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the President directed the commission to finish its probe and deliver a comprehensive report within 30 days.
