Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, the executive chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, has shut down a dredging site in Bogije Community after torrential rains triggered severe flooding in the area. The closure aims to stop further damage and safeguard residents and their property.
Heavy rainfall pounded parts of Lagos State and caused the dredging site to overflow, submerging homes and businesses across Bogije. Residents lost belongings and livelihoods as water swept through the community.
Social media filled with videos of the disaster, showing flooded streets and desperate families. Affected residents demanded swift action from the local government.
The council acted fast, identifying the dredging site shutdown as critical to preventing more flooding. Olowa said the local government understood the crisis gripping the community and would protect residents.
He told community members that extra steps were being rolled out to ease the flooding's impact and stop such emergencies happening again. The chairman urged people to stay calm and work with officials managing the response.
Assessment crews and emergency teams have started moving through affected zones to evaluate damage and begin cleanup work. The local government promised full support to those hit hardest by the deluge.
