Lagos Govt Unseals Ladipo Market Following Environmental Compliance

The Ladipo Market in Mushin, which sells auto spare parts, has been allowed to reopen by the Lagos State Government after being closed last month for environmental violations. The market was one of the four that LAWMA shut down for being dirty and polluting the environment.

The markets were reopened after they met the required conditions, according to LAWMA’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin. These conditions included having designated waste points, putting up block work fences and platforms for waste bins, buying double dino bins for waste storage, hiring bin keepers, working with approved PSP operators for regular evacuation, paying waste bills on time, and clearing street traders from road medians and setbacks.

Dr. Gbadegesin stressed the need for strict compliance measures to protect public health and avoid future health problems. He said that a filthy market can cause serious diseases like cholera, typhoid, Lassa fever, ebola, malaria, and others. He said that the state government will not tolerate some markets putting the people of Lagos at risk of such conditions, which can be prevented if they do the right things.

He warned that any future violations would face harsher penalties, including the permanent closure of the guilty market. He also urged the executive members of markets in the state to be responsible and advised traders to be clean in their trading activities, as that would benefit them and their customers. He said that local government authorities would be in charge of monitoring market operations’ compliance with set conditions and asked members of the public to help in this process by reporting any sanitation issues to LAWMA as soon as possible.
