Lagos police are launching a crackdown on vehicles with obscured or missing number plates starting Monday, June 15, 2026. The operation aims to tighten security across the state and prevent criminals from hiding their identities.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu issued the directive to enhance public safety. SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Police Public Relations Officer, announced the plan on Sunday.

CP Tijani Fatai, Commissioner of Police for Lagos State Command, will oversee the enforcement exercise. He's instructed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure compliance in their zones.

Cars with covered, defaced, unauthorised, or missing registration plates face impoundment. Police will subject violating vehicles to thorough investigations under the law.

According to Adebisi, this is a proactive move to strengthen law enforcement capabilities. Authorities want better ability to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, and track suspects.

"The enforcement exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists," she said. Instead, it's designed to prevent criminals from concealing their identities and activities.

All motorists must ensure their vehicles display valid, clearly visible registration plates at all times. Transport operators and fleet owners face particular scrutiny under the directive.

Vehicle owners should keep all documents current and ready for inspection. Police officers may request these papers during routine checks.

Adebisi stressed that public cooperation is crucial for success. Citizens are urged to report suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities immediately.

Residents can contact police through emergency response lines with information. Vigilance from the public strengthens the overall security effort.

Lagos police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property. Creating a safer environment remains their core priority for all residents and visitors.

This crackdown continues broader police efforts to curb criminal activity statewide. Officials believe visible registration plates make it harder for criminals to operate undetected.
