Aviation minister Festus Keyamo has ordered a full investigation into Thursday's incident at Benin airport in Edo State, where an Enugu Air aircraft veered off the runway after landing. The minister confirmed all passengers and crew members were safe following what aviation experts call a "runway excursion."
Keyamo directed relevant agencies to work with Enugu Air to determine what caused the aircraft to skid off the landing strip. He disclosed the information on his verified X account on Friday, hours after the incident occurred.
The crash-landing forced authorities to temporarily close Benin airport's runway due to the runway incursion. Air Peace subsequently suspended all flights to and from the facility as a precautionary measure.
"I have been duly informed that the incident with Enugu Air yesterday in Benin is that the aircraft skidded off the runway after landing successfully," Keyamo said on social media. "Everyone was safe.
I have directed all the relevant agencies to work closely with Enugu Air to unravel the cause," he added.
The minister's swift response underscores the aviation sector's commitment to safety protocols and incident management. No injuries were reported from the incident, which authorities are treating as a procedural matter requiring thorough examination.
