Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday. He stepped down from both his role as PM and as Labour Party leader.
Starmer made the announcement outside his official residence at 10 Downing Street. In his words, every choice he'd made prioritized what was best for the nation.
"I've always put the country I love first," he told waiting reporters. His statement emphasized that national interest had guided his tenure in office.
He took time to acknowledge his family's support during his time as leader. Starmer praised his wife Vic as his greatest source of strength.
His children, whom he called his greatest pride, also received special mention. The Prime Minister expressed deep affection for them during his farewell remarks.
