Gunfire erupted across Katsina State on Thursday as security forces clashed with armed bandits. Five suspected criminals fell dead in the coordinated raids.

Combined military and police units targeted camps operated by Muhammad Fulani, a bandit commander notorious across multiple states. His gang has terrorized Matazu, Musawa, Kankia, and Charanchi in Katsina, with operations extending into neighbouring Kano.

Dr. Nasir Mu'azu, the state's commissioner for internal security, confirmed the successful operation.

He revealed that troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, 10 magazines, and nine motorcycles from the criminals.

Among those killed was Samagi, a lieutenant to bandit kingpin Muhammadu Kachalla. Security sources say Samagi commanded significant respect within the criminal network.

But the headline victory came from the rescued hostages. Thirty-two abducted persons regained their freedom during the raids.

The freed captives included 10 women, 9 men, and 13 children held in bandit camps. Many had spent weeks or months in captivity, sources told this reporter.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje's administration vowed it won't negotiate with kidnappers. In his words, the state will pursue "decisive measures" to crush banditry entirely.

Manhunt operations continue across the state's troubled northwest. Security personnel are hunting Muhammad Fulani and gang members who escaped the initial assault.

Troops maintain surveillance on suspected hideouts throughout the affected zones. Officials say pressure on criminal sanctuaries will intensify in coming weeks.

The rescued victims have been taken to safety and are receiving medical attention. Investigations into their ordeal are underway.
