The Department of State Services rescued Professor Samuel Okunsebor, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, after gunmen kidnapped him. Operatives located him around 3:00 pm on Friday following intelligence-led operations.
Armed attackers abducted the professor on Wednesday at Mile Uku, a border community between Lafia and Nasarawa Eggon local government areas. The gunmen struck the community just after midnight, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
DSS officials handed the professor over to his family members in the presence of senior university leaders, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor Kitso Ngbargu. He was then transported to the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital for medical assessment and checks.
The rescue marks another kidnapping incident in the state's volatile security landscape. In June, three students from the Federal University of Lafia were seized by gunmen from their residence near the university's temporary campus in Akunza, Lafia.
Abductions have plagued the region as armed groups continue targeting students, academics and other residents. The incident underscores persistent security challenges facing educational institutions in Nasarawa state.
The successful recovery of Professor Okunsebor represents a rare win for security agencies in their battle against criminal gangs. Details surrounding arrests of the suspects remain unclear at this time.
