Nearly 720 couples in Kano have completed medical screening for an upcoming mass wedding. The tests happened across all 24 local government areas in the state.
Kano State Hisbah Board is running the exercise with help from the Health Ministry. They're checking for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug use, pregnancy, and other infections.
The state plans to marry around 3,000 couples soon. Officials say the programme targets the less privileged in society.
Mujahideen Aminudddeen, Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah Board, confirmed the update on Tuesday. He noted that couples from city local government areas will continue screening on Wednesday at KSACA office on Naibawa Road.
Participants must bring their registration forms to the screening venue. Couples from other areas will get their screening dates later.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf brought back the mass wedding scheme. It supports widows, divorcees, orphans, and other struggling residents by covering all marriage costs.
Couples who qualify will also receive financial aid and household support. The initiative marks a major push to help vulnerable populations.
