Umar Halilu Babatuwa, a young resident, died from severe injuries sustained in a suspected gang attack in Kano on Sunday night.
The assault took place along the route between Dan Agundi and Nassarawa areas of the metropolis.
His elder brother, Aliyu Halilu, told our reporters that Umar left their family home around 10:00 p.m. that evening. He never returned alive.
Aliyu said attackers brought his brother back with multiple stab wounds and deep machete cuts. The family rushed him to hospital immediately.
Despite their efforts, Umar couldn't survive his injuries. He died shortly after arriving at the medical facility.
"About 200 of them stormed the area and attacked people," Aliyu told us. He noted that the family couldn't identify who exactly carried out the assault.
"The way they treated us, may Allah judge them as well," the grieving brother lamented. His words captured the family's deep anguish.
Aliyu alleged that police officers were encountered during the rushed journey to the hospital. However, he claimed none offered to help or facilitate urgent medical care for his dying brother.
Frustration marked his tone when discussing the pursuit of justice. He questioned whether reporting such crimes to authorities would yield any results.
"Even if you say we should report to the government, how many people have been killed already and what has the government done?" Aliyu asked. He added that the family had resigned itself to divine intervention.
He called on Kano State authorities and security agencies to investigate thoroughly. A decisive response was needed to stop gangs from terrorizing residents, he insisted.
The Kano State Police Command's spokesperson hasn't issued any statement regarding the incident as of press time.
