Police in Osun State have arrested 24 suspects in connection with cult killings and political violence. Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan announced the arrests at police headquarters in Osogbo on Monday.
Gotan said recent violence across the state has taken on political overtones. He noted that intensified operations led to the capture of these suspects.
The command arrested Kareem Saheed, also called "Tanfiani," and Oyeladun Muideen, known as "Akilapa." Others include Ridwan Adekola, Mukaila Azeez ("Mikki"), and Sunday Friday ("Akube").
More arrests involved Olamilekan Fatai, Tiamiyu Ismail, Famuyiwa Adekunle Toib, and Ajiboye Toheed. Police also detained Morufu Sodiq and Folorunsho Moshood during the operations.
Hassan Sodiq, Badiru Saheed, and Adegoke Olalekan made up part of the group. Faruk Olawale, Iyanuoluwa Sarumi, and Afolabi Ahmed were equally apprehended.
Adeshina Lukman, Mutiu Opeyemi, and Olushola Daniel appear on the list. Abiola Olabode, Azeez Abiodun, Babatunde Kehinde, and Dada Mayowa complete the suspects arrested.
Investigations into their alleged roles in violent crimes continue. Gotan stressed the command's determination to dismantle criminal networks.
"I want to reiterate the Command's commitment to rid the state of criminal elements," the commissioner told reporters. He said this effort aims to ensure peace before, during and after elections.
Gotan issued a direct warning to cultists and political thugs. He said the police would not tolerate activities threatening state security.
Anyone planning to disrupt public peace must abandon such plans immediately. The full force of the law awaits those who refuse, he cautioned.
Law-abiding residents can expect continued protection from the force. Gotan promised the police would remain professional, neutral, and non-partisan.
According to him, constitutional responsibilities will be carried out without fear. He pledged that the rule of law would guide all police actions.
