Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, expressing confidence that the nation's democratic journey will continue to deliver greater prosperity, stability and development for all citizens.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor commended Nigerians for their enduring faith in democratic governance and their commitment to constitutional rule despite the socio-economic and political challenges facing the country.
Oborevwori described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria's history and a powerful symbol of the courage, resilience and determination of Nigerians in their struggle for democracy.
According to him, the sacrifices made by the nation's democratic heroes and pro-democracy activists laid the foundation for the freedoms and democratic institutions Nigerians enjoy today and must never be forgotten.
The governor noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity for citizens and leaders alike to reflect on the nation's democratic progress, strengthen democratic institutions and recommit themselves to the collective task of building a more united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
He reiterated that democracy remains the most effective system of government because it guarantees citizens the right to participate in governance while promoting accountability, transparency and adherence to the rule of law.
Oborevwori urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and elected leaders at all levels, stressing that peace, tolerance, patriotism and national unity remain critical to sustainable development and nation-building.
Expressing optimism about the country's future, the governor said ongoing reforms and the collective commitment of leaders and citizens would ultimately yield positive outcomes for the nation.
"On this Democracy Day, I congratulate all Nigerians and commend their steadfast belief in democratic governance. We must remain hopeful and united as a nation. With collective effort, patriotism and commitment to national development, greater days are certainly ahead for our country," he said.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy through people-centred policies, infrastructure development and strategic programmes under the MORE Agenda aimed at improving the welfare and living standards of Deltans.
He called on citizens to remain law-abiding and continue supporting government initiatives designed to promote economic growth, peace, security and sustainable development across Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
