Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area, Friday Ovoke Warri, has called on communities to report government workers who abandon their duties despite being on the payroll, warning that such negligence will no longer be tolerated.
Warri issued this directive on Thursday during an unscheduled visit to Umeh Primary Healthcare Centre, where he was shocked to find that not a single staff member was present at their duty post. He described the situation as unacceptable and vowed that his administration would take strict measures to address such laxity.
The surprise visit was part of an initiative to verify the activities of over seven healthcare workers stationed at the facility, all of whom receive government salaries. None of the staff were informed of the visit, allowing the chairman to witness firsthand the extent of their absenteeism.
While speaking with residents, Warri expressed disappointment, stating, "It is deeply concerning that a government healthcare facility is open, yet no staff members are available to serve the community. Umeh residents deserve access to quality healthcare, and we are committed to ensuring that public infrastructure meets their needs." He urged residents to consistently report such cases to the local government to ensure government resources are effectively utilized for the benefit of the people.
During the visit, Warri also inspected the deteriorating Umeh Market, which has suffered repeated damage due to annual flooding. He assured residents that the council would explore ways to address the issue and improve the market's condition for traders and buyers.
