Iran's football federation has accused the United States of blocking entry visas for key officials ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The complaint emerged just five days before the tournament kicks off.
According to Iran's embassy in South Africa, American authorities denied travel documents to three senior officials. Executive Director Mehdi Kharati, federation secretary general Hedayat Mombini, and Media Director Mohsen Motamedkia were all rejected.
Iran's first match is scheduled for nine days from now against New Zealand in Los Angeles. The timing of the visa denials has angered Tehran officials.
In a statement, Iran's football authority slammed what it called US negligence. "The incompetent host is failing to fulfill its responsibilities properly," the federation posted on social media.
Officials noted that Iran's delegation should be treated as FIFA guests, not US visitors. They argued FIFA bears responsibility for ensuring all team members receive proper documentation.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have simmered for months over various political issues. Last year, Iran had threatened to boycott the tournament entirely.
This marks Iran's seventh appearance at a World Cup tournament. The nation remains committed to competing despite the diplomatic friction.
Federation authorities revealed a backup plan to address the crisis. Officials will travel to Mexico first, hoping Washington resolves the visa situation before they need to enter the United States.
Iran shares Group G with Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand. All Iranian matches will be played on American soil.
FIFA has not yet publicly responded to the visa controversy. World Cup organizers typically work to resolve such administrative disputes between host nations and participating teams.
The visa denials represent another obstacle for Iranian football at an already politically charged tournament. Whether the three officials will ultimately gain entry remains unclear.
