Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police has ordered an immediate investigation into serious allegations against two senior officers. CSP Hussaini Gimba and CSP Hassan Gimba face accusations linked to a missing person's case.
The case involves Abubakar Idris, known as Dadiyata, who vanished years ago under murky circumstances. A Kano-based human rights lawyer, Abba Hikima, submitted formal petitions on Friday demanding action.
Hikima's petitions were addressed directly to IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu. They drew on claims made by Muhammad Musa Kamarawa, a former aide to ex-Zamfara governor Bello Matawalle.
According to Kamarawa's allegations, the two officers made incriminating statements to him. They allegedly claimed they had killed Dadiyata and others at Operations Yaki in Kaduna.
Hikima's law firm took a balanced approach in its submission. The petition stated that if false allegations existed, a transparent probe would vindicate the officers immediately.
But there was a stronger message too. Should the claims prove true, Hikima wrote, justice must prevail "regardless of rank, office or position."
Dadiyata disappeared from his Barnawa home in Kaduna back in August 2019. His case has remained unresolved, drawing sustained public outcry for answers.
The IGP's office confirmed receiving the petitions through CF Lateef Adio Ahmed. He's the principal staff officer at police headquarters.
A formal letter was sent back to the petitioners confirming action. Responsibility for the investigation was handed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the Monitoring Unit.
Police headquarters assured Hikima of the Force's dedication to justice and accountability. Officials pledged swift action on the matter.
Dadiyata worked as a lecturer and social media commentator before his abduction. His case remains among Nigeria's most troubling unresolved disappearances.
