INEC promises real-time results on portal

As the governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo States draw near, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised to upload the results from each polling unit on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in real-time.

This was disclosed by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who was represented by the Acting Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mary Nkem, at the People’s Townhall on Election Security organised by Channels Television and Kimpact Development Initiative.

He said the commission had fixed the issues that affected the IReV during the presidential election in February 2023 and had made adequate arrangements for the timely delivery of sensitive materials and ad hoc staff to the polling units. He added that the sensitive materials would be transported from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s vaults to the three states by Monday.

He also advised all the political parties participating in the elections to keep track of the results from all the polling units to ensure transparency in the collation process.

The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, also spoke at the town hall and called for more such platforms to enhance democracy.

In another development, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced that the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Stephen Olanrewaju, had been redeployed. This followed the allegations by the organised labour that Olanrewaju was involved in the recent attack on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri. Egbetokun said, “I am aware that there have been allegations on social media against the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, but for this election, we’re changing the commissioner of police in Imo.”
