Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Saturday night, received two major honours—Outstanding Independent Governor and Best Independent Governor in Urban Renewal of the Year 2025—at the Independent Newspapers Silver Jubilee Awards.

The awards ceremony, themed “Game Changers: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Tomorrow,” was held at Eko Hotels and Suites to commemorate the organisation’s 25th anniversary.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori described the recognition as a validation of his administration’s performance and development agenda.

Speaking with journalists after the event, Onyeme said the awards reflected the visible transformation across Delta State since the governor assumed office in 2023.

“It is evident to Nigerians, especially Deltans, that the governor has changed the narrative. Today, he stands out as one of the best in urban renewal, with results that are both visible and impactful,” he said.

He noted that Delta, one of Nigeria’s most urbanised states, has witnessed rapid infrastructural development, particularly in its major cities.

Onyeme highlighted ongoing and completed flyover projects in Ughelli, Warri, Effurun, and Enerhen Junction, saying they have significantly improved traffic flow while enhancing urban aesthetics and functionality.

He further disclosed that the administration has delivered about 300 kilometres of roads within the past year, describing the feat as a major step toward addressing infrastructure gaps.

“When organisations conduct independent assessments and recognise this administration, it is not surprising. The achievements are clear,” he added.

According to him, the awards would not only serve as recognition but also motivate the government to intensify efforts in delivering more dividends of democracy.

“We have not rested and will not rest. We were elected to serve the people, and we remain committed to that mandate. The more responsibility we are given, the more we will deliver,” Onyeme stated.

He attributed the governor’s performance to his passion for service and strong connection to the state, noting that Oborevwori is determined to leave a lasting legacy.

“His goal is to ensure that by the end of his tenure, the impact of his administration will be clear and set a benchmark for future governments,” he said.

Earlier, the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers, Steve Omanufeme, congratulated the awardees, explaining that the selection process combined public voting with rigorous evaluation by a jury and the organisation’s board.

He added that activities marking the newspaper’s silver jubilee would continue in October with a special event involving key stakeholders and invited guests.
