The Inter-Party Advisory Council in Cross River State has projected that at least 2.5 million eligible voters will participate in the 2027 general election. Effiom Edet Okon, IPAC chairman in the state, made this declaration at a press conference recently.
Over recent weeks, IPAC mobilised political parties across all 18 local government areas to encourage their members and supporters to register as voters. The council worked with the Independent National Electoral Commission, civil society groups, youth and women organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, market associations, and community leaders during the voter registration drive.
"With the ongoing mobilisation and cooperation from INEC and all stakeholders, Cross River State is positioned to record no fewer than 2.5 million votes in the 2027 general elections," he said. According to him, this figure represents a collective target that everyone involved must pursue vigorously.
Okon stressed that a larger voting population strengthens democratic legitimacy. He added that it boosts the state's political influence, national standing, and voice in shaping Nigeria's future.
The projection marks significant growth from the 2023 general election, when 1.766 million voters were registered in Cross River State. Current estimates put the state's population above 5 million.
IPAC called on eligible residents to complete their voter registration before the deadline. "Democracy begins with voter registration," the council stated in its appeal.
The organisation emphasised a simple message: no voter's card means no voice, and no registration means no participation. Officials urged citizens not to miss this opportunity to have their say in the electoral process.
