Demola Olarenwaju, a senior political aide to Atiku Abubakar, issued a stark warning on Saturday. He cautioned President Tinubu's government against withholding medical care from detained former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Olarenwaju said the administration would face serious consequences if anything befalls El-Rufai. He accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission of denying the ex-governor proper healthcare.
El-Rufai's spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, had reported that his boss suffers from inflamed, reddish and itchy eyes. According to him, the condition requires immediate medical treatment while El-Rufai remains in ICPC custody.
Authorities arrested El-Rufai at Abuja's international airport earlier this year. He faces court charges including abuse of office and money laundering tied to his time as governor.
Writing on X platform, Olarenwaju was blunt about the risks. "Denying El-Rufai access to medical care is a risk the Bola Tinubu regime cannot afford," he posted.
He warned the government directly and pointedly. "If anything happens to the man, it will be on the government that has detained him illegally," Olarenwaju added.
The aide criticized how far political tensions have escalated. "Politics taken to this extent is extremely dangerous," he concluded in his statement.
