Rebecca Kambai, a 500-level student at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, lost her life in a hit-and-run incident on the Bauchi-Jos Road. The 19-year-old died on Tuesday evening when a Sharon commercial bus struck the motorcycle she was riding near the Police Officers' Mess.

According to a family source, Rebecca had returned home for the holidays but realised she'd left some belongings at school. She'd arranged for a commercial driver travelling to Bauchi to bring the items to her.

When the driver arrived at the Bauchi motor park near Awala Hotel, he called her to collect the package. Her brother took her to the park on a motorcycle to pick up her things.

After collecting the items, the two were heading home when disaster struck. As they approached the Police Officers' Mess and prepared to turn into the New GRA area, the Sharon bus rammed into them and sped away.

The impact threw Rebecca onto the road with devastating force. She suffered severe head injuries, including a fractured skull, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her brother sustained injuries in the collision. He was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

A First Information Report from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Bauchi Sector Command, placed the crash at approximately 5:15 p.m. on July 14, 2026. Personnel arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later.

The FRSC identified the motorcycle as a Jincheng model with registration number TFB-38-QB, used for private purposes. Items recovered from the scene included the motorcycle, a women's hair stretcher and a pair of shoes.

Rebecca's body was taken to the hospital's mortuary. Her brother remained hospitalised as of the report's filing.

The Sharon bus driver fled immediately after the crash. Authorities had not identified the suspect by the time this report was filed, though efforts to locate and arrest him were underway.
