Health Minister: Successful Nigerian Doctors Abroad Seek Return to Nigeria

Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, revealed that successful Nigerian doctors, nurses, and health workers abroad are considering returning to the country.

According to the Minister, these professionals are willing to come back if the necessary infrastructure is put in place to enable them to do their jobs effectively.

Pate acknowledged the global migration phenomenon known as “Japa,” which has led to the exodus of thousands of young health workers in Nigeria over the past few years.

However, he emphasized that the government is working to make the industry more conducive for health professionals to stay in Nigeria and practice their profession.

The Minister also highlighted that there are many health workers who have chosen to remain in Nigeria despite the opportunity to travel abroad, where they could receive better pay and welfare packages.

He commended these dedicated professionals for their commitment to serving their country.

Pate further stated that some Nigerian health professionals go abroad for training with the intention of returning to Nigeria, better skilled and ready to contribute to the nation’s healthcare system.

He stressed that the government is doing its best to ensure that the healthcare sector is equipped with the necessary resources and infrastructure to retain and attract skilled professionals.

The Minister acknowledged that the ‘Japa’ phenomenon is not unique to Nigeria and is a global issue. He emphasized that the most important component of the healthcare sector is its human resources, with hospitals being crucial complements.

As such, the government is taking the necessary steps to address the challenges faced by the healthcare sector and create an environment that encourages professionals to stay in Nigeria and contribute to the development of the nation’s healthcare system.
