Gunmen shot and killed two women in Gero community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, sparking angry protests on Monday. Residents discovered the bodies in the early hours of the day in the community, which sits behind the Jos South Local Government Secretariat.
The circumstances of the killings weren't immediately clear. The discovery prompted women and youths to march toward the secretariat, carrying the bodies to demand action from authorities.
Protesters blocked roads leading to the secretariat, halting vehicular traffic as they called for better security and justice. They demanded that government and security agencies act decisively to stop the violence.
Mary Chollom, one of the protesters, condemned the killings as yet another tragedy in Plateau State's escalating security crisis. "We are tired of burying our loved ones.
These women did nothing to deserve this. Government and security agencies must take decisive action to stop these senseless killings and ensure those responsible are brought to justice," she said.
Chollom lamented that innocent residents—women, children and farmers—continue suffering from violent attacks. Families have been traumatised and communities now live in fear, she noted.
She pressed both federal and state governments to strengthen security operations in vulnerable communities. Residents need the freedom to conduct their daily lives without terror, she stressed.
Chollom also urged security agencies to ramp up surveillance and identify those behind the attack. She argued that bringing perpetrators to justice would help restore public confidence in the security forces.
Security personnel were deployed to the Jos South Local Government Secretariat and nearby areas following the demonstration. Calm gradually returned to the community.
Attempts to reach DSP Alfred Alabo, spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, for official comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
